The Op. Bravo Homebrew Competition is a BJCP sanctioned event, a Homebrew competition open to any amateur homebrewer; age 21 or older.
All entries (along with a decent amount to serve to heroes) must be delivered to Shannon Brewing on the day of the event. November 11, 2017. Please bring everything you need to serve with you.
All entries must be handcrafted products, containing ingredients available to the general public, and made using private equipment by hobbyist brewers (i.e., no use of commercial facilities or Brew on Premises operations, supplies, etc.).
Homebrew 4 Heroes and “Op. Bravo” are not responsible for mis‐categorized entries, or entries that have arrived damaged.
Homebrew 4 Hereos reserves the right to combine and/or expand styles for judging and to restructure awards as needed depending upon the quantity and quality of entries. All possible efforts will be made to combine or group similar styles. Combined or grouped entries will be judged according to the style they were originally entered in.
Qualified judging of all entries is the primary goal of our event. Judges will evaluate and score each entry. The average of the scores will rank each entry in its category. Each flight will have at least one BJCP judge. A peoples choice award will be given based of the number of votes received during the event.
Brewers are limited to the entry on 1 beer. Period.
Recipes are not required. Should an entrant provide their recipe, they will retain the rights to it. The winner of the Peoples Choice award will be asked for their recipe so it can be immortalized in a homebrew kit marketed to homebrew supply shops nationwide.
Please fill out the entry forms completely. Be meticulous about noting any special ingredients that must be specified per the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines. Failure to note such ingredients may impact the judges' scoring of your entry.
The Best of Show judging will be determined by a panel of senior level BJCP judges based on a second judging of the top winners. The People's Choice award will be a "Best Beer" competition judged by heroes and those with a status of "Judge for a Day".
Bottles will not be returned to entrants for any reason. All bottled entries become the property of the Op. Bravo Homebrew Competition. All contents of the People's Choice entry remain the property of the brewer.
Rules and regulations are subject to change.
Due to Texas law, Homebrew Competitions are not allowed to charge for entries. The fee is for entrance to the event, a tshirt, a pint glass and brewery tour. This fee must be paid for an entry to be eligible for an award and to be served in the People's Choice competiton.
Bottle Acceptance Rules
Each entry will consist three (3) 10 to 12 ounce capped bottles that are void of all identifying information, including labels and embossing. Printed caps are allowed, but discouraged and must be blacked out completely.
Bottles must be free of labels or other easily identified marks. Re‐used Commercial bottles with embossed logos are allowed but discouraged.
12oz brown glass bottles are preferred; however, green or clear glass and corked bottles will be accepted. Swing top bottles will be disqualified and not judged.
Bottles will not be returned to entrants for any reason.
Completed bottle labels must be submitted with all entries, and can be printed directly from the entry website. Bottle labels should be attached to bottles with a rubber band only; glue and/or tape are unacceptable.
Failure to submit entries properly will exclude them from judging.
The portion of the entry for peoples choice can be labeled, capped, kegged or packaged at the brewers discretion as these will be served face to face with the judges. Entrants must bring all equipment needed to serve the beer they are providing to the Hero judges. PLEASE NOTE: The bottles and served beers should be the same beer.
The awards ceremony will take place at 6 pm during the Op. Bravo event on November 11, 2017 at Shannon Brewing.
1st, 2nd, & 3rd place awards will be issued overall *. A People's Choice award will be given out based on the hero/judge voting.
All entries will be flighted with similar beers and will be judged according to BJCP 2015 Guidelines. The winners of each flight will progress to the best of show round where places of 1, 2 and 3 will be awarded based on score.
Each Hero/Judge for the day will receive a Homebrew 4 Heroes bottlecap to use for voting. The bottlecap is to be deposited in the bin for the beer they like the best. At the end of the event, the caps will be counted and the award will be presented. A table map showing the beer name and style will be provided to each recipient for them to determine which beers they want to try. 2oz pours will be served.
Unclaimed awards from the awards ceremony will be mailed back to the entrants within two weeks of the awards ceremony.
See the About page for more information on prizes.
* The competition committee reserves the right to combine and/or expand categories based on number of entries. All possible effort will be made to combine similar styles. All brews in combined categories will be judged according to the style they were originally entered in. Shannon Brewing reserves the right to alter the recipe for the Pro Am competition to work with their scale, brew house equipment and ingredients.
No entries will be shipped. The 3 bottles must be delivered chilled, along with the portion being served, on the day of the event.
Tips and Hints
While it is not required to bring an entire keg (or bottles equaling a 5 gallon batch), it is recommended to have plenty on hand to serve to Heroes. It is a nice way to say thank you for their service and will ensure you get votes to try to win the sweet People's Choice prize pack.
As there will be a fair number of beers available for the People's Choice award, think of creative ways to market your beer/brand. This includes the decorating of your serving area.
Shannon Brewing is family and pet friendly. Bring your 2 and 4 legged kiddos and be sure to say hi to Arlo the brew dog.
